If you’re reading this for the first time, there is a very stupid story behind why this category is called MakDauds.

You see, we used to hang out at this coffee shop at the junction of Changi Road and Frankel Avenue called Daud. It had maintained the Dawood, and subsequently Daud, name through several changes of ownership and had been Frankel Daud Seafood Restaurant since we were in secondary school. This despite the fact that for many years it did not actually sell any seafood.

Now, sometime in the middle of 2004 it changed ownership again and this time, the new owners did not use the name Daud, instead choosing to call itself Frankel Junction Restaurant. This was the beginning of the end. The entire atmosphere of the place changed along with the ownership. It was too bright, it had none of the charm that made us want to hang out there in the first place. In any case, within six months it was bought over again and this time the name of the coffeshop was changed to Kopi Square, or K2 (seriously) for short.

Now we hang out at a place a little up the road called Mak’s Place. While I maintain that it still isn’t the same as having a coffee shop to hang out at and talk for hours and it isn’t open for twenty four hours, the advantage is that it does serve better food. Although they could use some improvement in the way of hot waitresses. But I digress.

In any case, whenever we hang out on Saturday nights we still refer to it as Daud. So, to pay tribute to both Maks Place and Daud, we decided to name this category where we document our Saturday night adventures as MakDauds.

So don’t forget to join us for the good times and great tastes at M.A.K.D.A.U.D.S!
