So it was on an impulse that me and a fren caught Sim Sin City 2000 on its debut. And man was it worth our time and money! Now, I’m not a loyal follower of the graphic novel series, much less a dedicated comic fan but I know great artistic direction when I see one (or at least I tend to have a general taste that most can agree rather than debate on). So anyway, just when I thought the most faithful comic adaptation was the brooding and grim Batman Begins, Sin City blows that one out of the water right down to the graphic novels’ ‘inkings’. In fact, the paneled frames of the novel practically served as the storyboards for the film and hence effectively defying the term adaptation.

Much, if not all, of the film scenes were shot in front of green scenes; almost every background was replicated digitally. Sky Captain And The World of Tomorrow used the same method in an attempt to create the mood of old photos but evidently, the result was far from pleasing. But with City, it’s pretty freakin hard to tell which were digitally composed which makes their noir-ish world more believable.

Anyway, long story cut short (not wanting to risk giving anything away), you should check the film out! Yes, i’m looking at all of you red-blooded males out there. The film’s probably not gonna appeal to a great deal of women or likewise, to the fainthearted.

Oh yeah, Sin City author Frank Miller (who co-directs the movie) makes a a cameo as a man of the cloth:
