Rock Star INXS: The Saga Continues

I’ve never really watched any of the Survivor seasons, but one thing I’m thankful for is that when you’re stuck in a remote location like in the desert or on an island, the opportunities to be a corporate shill are relatively limited. Which means that unlike The Apprentice or Rock Star INXS, we will likely never see a challenge on Survivor that involves promoting Levi’s jeans. I love my jeans, but I’ve never thought of being in an advertisement as particularly rock and roll.
That being said, for the first time in this series my favourite performance of the set came from JD. JD, to me at least, is the oddball of the group. My introduction to him came early on in the competition, and basically it involves the look on Jordis’ face when he kind of asked her out after the competition was over. It was pretty funny to me. Today’s show however, pleasantly surprised me. His performance of Nirvana’s Come As You Are seemed a little overly dramatic and overwrought at first, but slowing down the tempo was a good idea. To then kick into overdrive for the final chorus was the dealbreaker however, and it showed a lot of showmanship. And his self-penned composition, Pretty Vegas was a great song, and one that seemed very INXSy. Kudos to you JD.
Jordis Unga’s intially invulnerable facade has come down a little over the past few weeks, and doing a great cover of Imagine didn’t save her from being in the bottom three for the first time in the course of the competition. I think Dave Navarro hit the nail on the head when he commented that the initial spark that created a lot of Jordis fans in the beginning seems to have faded. I worry a little that she’s beginning to remind me of Camille Velasco from the third season of American Idol. Camille impressed me with her singing Lauryn Hill’s part from the Fugee’s Ready or Not during the audition round, because she matched Ms. Hill’s tone and richness of vocals. But she never came close to that great introduction during the competition and her inexperience showed itself up as highly evident performance anxiety on her part.
I sense a little performance anxiety coming from Jordis’ too with the series coming to a close, and it doesn’t help that both Jordis and Camille are Pacific Islander hotties. Jordis has this incredible tone to her voice that’s perfect for rock, but it seems to me that she’s been more comfortable with the slower numbers, but I must say that I for one enjoyed her version of Layla, more so than the Clapton original. That she had trouble with her own composition is a definite kink in her armour. She might not make top three, but it’s been a great ride. And she’s still gorgeous, of course.
So if I were to make a completely biased guess as to who makes the top three, I’d say MiG, Marty (who had another great original song with Trees) and Jordis, with JD as a wild card.
Oh, and yeah JD’s birthday cake fight was one of the better “reality” moments from the mansion, only to be topped by his waking up naked with cake on his ass. And yeah, I’d like to be in the shower and hot tub with Jordis.
