Datuk K Fed

I just think it would be incredibly funny if Datuk K started following the trajectory of his namesake, K-Fed (aka Kevin Federline). I’m just hoping a year from now he starts wearing wifebeaters and baggy jeans and talks about having his own career as a rapper.

In any case, here’s his debut performance (Kevin Federline, not Datuk K) on the Teen Choice Awards. How is it? Well, it’s K Fed. You be the judge.

Ryan Star - In The Air Tonight (Rock Star: Supernova)

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

Ryan Star wins the encore again (deservingly), and interestingly enough with a Phil Collins song, although that song is “In the Air Tonight”. The thing about Ryan’s best performances is that it seems like two minutes is simply not enough. Ryan tends to fare better with the sort of mid-tempo, melodramatic numbers but I’m not sure how he’d fare with more upbeat, fists in the air kind of tunes that a band like Supernova seems to want to make its bread and butter.

filipinos rule

A happy family picnic? No siree, that’s your typical filipino Sunday noon gathering right there…(venues include, and not limited to, Orchard Green and Botanic Gardens)…I can’t quite recall the last time an ad was this blatant with as to who would be their targeted demographic, despite serving a practical purpose (these people do need to contact one another u know)…not that there’s really anything wrong…

I wait with baited breath to see Starhub going just as bold for their Green prepaid cards (bangladeshi dudes crowding around a public phone comes to mind)

Ryan Star - Losing My Religion (Rock Star: Supernova)

Monday, August 7th, 2006

If you’ve been following Singapore Idol… well, this is what you’ve been missing out on. This season’s batch of contestants didn’t impress me very much at first, but I have to remember that I missed at least three weeks from the beginning of last season as well. I think some front runners are starting to emerge, and while Ryan Star wasn’t spectacular initially in my opinion he really stepped up his game first with Live’s I Alone and a defining rendition of REM’s Losing My Religion (one of my favourite songs) that won him an encore performance from the band.

To be fair, I think Dilana Robichaux has been the strongest and most consistent of all the performers thus far, turning in really good covers of Nirvana’s Lithium and Cyndi Lauper’s Time after Time. She doesn’t have to put on an act, she just does gets on stage and rocks. And sometimes it’s as simple as that.

The band itself (Tommy Lee, Jason Newsted and Gilby Clarke) is an interesting concept, and it appears from the tracks they’ve previewed their music is something more akin to AC/DC than any of the bands they were in (Mötley Crüe, Metallica and Guns N’ Roses respectively). It’s interesting, I think, that Gilby Clarke (who was only added to the GNR line-up during their declining years) tends to take the more authoritative voice during contestant evaluations and Tommy Lee tends to act the fool, when Tommy Lee is one of the producers for the show and the show is described as “the Tommy Lee Project” on several places on the internet, which was probably a discarded early title for the series. Jason Newsted still comes off as the eager young buck that he was in Metallica.

There seems to be a bit more conflict between the contestants than there was last season, when most of the derision was aimed at JD Fortune, although this could be simply be a matter of clever editing on the part of the show’s producers to make for more entertaining viewing.

This year’s NDP to end with a bang

The National Stadium… before and after.

It should be general knowledge that this year’s National Day Parade will be the last to be held at the National Stadium. What is less well known is that something special is planned this year for the fireworks display that is the highlight of every National Day Parade. As a treat to all Singaporeans, the demolition of the National Stadium will be accomplished by means of a large explosion that will accompany the traditional fireworks display and mark the end of the 2006 NDP. This will no doubt enthrall Singaporeans young and old.

Ka Boom Wah, head of the pyrotechnics/ demolition company spearheading the effort said, “We found that it was more cost effective to combine the pyrotechnics display with the demolition of the National Stadium, providing a spectacle that Singaporeans will remember for years to come as well as a step towards the further development of Singapore’s infrastructure.” Mr Ka was unavailable for comment as to how spectators would be evacuated from the stadium before the grand finale.

On a completely unrelated note, special guests to this year’s NDP include residents of Changi Prison, esteemed members of local opposition parties, representatives of the foreign media and popular local blogger Mr Brown, who were all given tickets as a gesture towards a more inclusive Singapore.

Listening to: Warren Zevon - ” Keep Me In Your Heart” - The Wind

Note: This headline has nothing to do with Project Loser.

Random conversation somehow descending into nonsense about the Tammy home sex video. Note: I’m piecing together the conversations from memory, bare with me if it’s not strictly accurate.

Zhaki: Maybe it’s Tammy Tay.
Azmi: From Growing Up?
Farhan: The show where ironically nobody grew up.
Zhaki: Tammy Tay was hot man. Especially in the first season.
Azmi: Oh man..

Listening to: Maritime - ” German Engineering (unpopular.radio) ” -

Saturday evening (or in the wee hours of Sunday if you prefer) it was just Shah, Azmi and myself attending the MakDaud’s session since everybody else seemed to be occupied for one reason or another. It was one of the smaller gatherings in a while, but there’s nothing particularly remarkable there.

Something interesting happened when I went to pay the bill though. The aunty at the counter asked “Not filming today?”. Apparently she’s actually seen the MakDaud’s videos, which I guess isn’t that strange given that Azmi’s Youtube page appears on the first page of a Google search for Mak’s Place. So there. We have a certain amount of fame (if you can call it that), so pretty soon we’ll have our faces on the walls of Mak’s Place, “As seen on UsDudes.com”. In your face, Suhaimi Yusof and Makansutra!
